Savannah and Charleston are pretty close for me, with Hilton Head and Beaufort right in between being a plus. The beaches, and the surrounding islands give Charleston the edge for me. I'll take Folly, Sullivans, IOP, Kiawah, and Edisto over Tybee. For people who like to party, like me, these three fit the bill.

Savannah has a slightly more relaxed vibe too, in my opinion. My 7 year old son would find that more interesting and enjoy sitting at one of the River Street cafes watching the container ships go up and down the river. We found Charleston to be more expensive than Savannah, although we traveled to Savannah first and you know, inflation, so that could be it. We spent more on food/gas and spent more money doing things, like the plantation. When researching accomodations, I also found them to be more expensive in the historic area.
